René Cournoyer is a newcomer to the Canadian senior national team. In 2014 he competed at the Youth Olympic Games where he missed qualifying for the all-around final by one spot, but did qualify for the individual apparatus finals on vault and horizontal bar. In 2014 Cournoyer also competed at the Junior Pan American Championships where he won gold on floor exercise, silver on vault, and bronze in team. He won another team bronze at the 2014 Pacific Rim Championships, where he had top-five finishes on rings, vault, and horizontal bar. He achieved a career highlight in 2013 when he won gold on the horizontal bar in the senior division at the Canadian Championships as a 16-year-old.
Family: Parents Denis Cournoyer and Lucie Paquette. Younger brother Laurent.
Getting into the Sport: Started doing gymnastics at age 7 because he wanted to do acrobatics.
Outside Interests: Enjoys reading, hiking, kayaking… Studying natural sciences in Cégep.
Odds and Ends: Role model is Kyle Shewfelt, who inspired him to want to compete for Team Canada. Always travels with his club’s mascot. Likes to exchange shirts with athletes from other countries.
